Interesting! Yes, that does make a lot of sense. I always thought the powersaving was just a hardware-related setting, using lower wattage, turning off when idle, etc.

But if it is actually an element of the WiFi specification, then yes I can understand the protocol makes some shortcuts to just provide the most common and least demanding features.

Unfortunately, this does not work with my n900. Perhaps it's using the DNS from the phone data connection instead of the wlan? I don't know.

All I know is that I can't ping local host names on wifi.

My LAN is provided by a wireless router. I run Ubuntu on my desktop host name "Geo". The N810 can't resolve Geo.local but ping will work with the NAT IP 192.168.1.100.
