The popularity depends of the country.
For example, in Spain is more used even than Whatsapp nowadays!

I've heard of Line too and it seems it is available for even the s40 platform though it's used mostly in Europe and Asia. Wechat is quite popular in Asia as it offers more features than whatsapp like voice chat, video calling, etc. It is gaining popularity and recently Messi has been roped in as its brand ambassador. Would sure love to have a port of Line or Wechat or Kik.
