https://web.telegram.org works on iceweasel / easy debian (wheezy version from sulu)
Pretty slow (ignore the unresponsive scripts) - but it works (also emoticons). Haven't tested uploading a file.

tried on both 3g and wlan...

Forgot to say, already registered and used successfully cli version; deleted old folder and extracted new one; maybe should I delete some config file located somewhere?
The same is happening to me, did you solve it?

If you want something convenient and mostly working currently the best option is Yappari.

Telegram can work with Pidgin http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=94324 but will crash when you receive a message. Restarting Pidgin will result in showing the message, so it kinda works. It is also missing some Telegram features and history.

You can also use https://web.telegram.org it works on iceweasel with easy debian but is very slow. Has the standard Telegram features and albeit slow it works.

Problem with any of the Telegram options is that there is no solid push method to receive messages. Would be nice to see someone working on it again.

For the time being you can use the unofficial command line version of telegram: https://github.com/vysheng/tg

compile it, afaik no deb for maemo. I did compile it some time ago but lost intrest, its basically just whatsapp with some bells and whistles so i didnt bother again. Compiling it is simple, install deps, disable lua in configure and then make. EDIT: just tried, compiled successfully after disabling lua, json.

Its not deb but pretty simple to place, just extract into exact folder structure as in archive (ofcourse the folder structure INSIDE telegram-cli_v1.3.1 folder), then chmod +x the /usr/bin/telegram-cli shell script and opt/telegram-cli/telegram-cli . This one is without lua support, but ive enabled json support in this. You can edit and place/change all arguments in /usr/bin/telegram-cli script. For usage see REAME : https://github.com/vysheng/tg/raw/1.3.1/README.md

It would be great to see SIgnal messenger on N900. It's truly secure
