I have noticed that nothing I can find in any repository can play GIF files. I have lots of funny ones I like to attach to emails for friends. Does anyone have a desire to make a GIF plug for the image gallery or other facility? It was common on most Symbian smartphones and even some dumbphones, and could be of use to those of us with large libraries of vulgar and funny GIFs.

Has GIF not been supported in previous Maemo devices?

You are talking about animated GIF files. Those can be played with browser. Of course, it is like a hammer but it works.

Yes, the browser should work, but I agree that it would be nice if animated GIFs were supported in the image viewer. Or maybe it should be the media player? Hmm.

well, I don't see any recent alternative... there were projects for animated png's, but those aren't reality so far...

Unisys, not CompuServe, the patent was on LZW compression, not GIF in general, and it expired in 2003.
