Is there interest in GPS tracking among N810 owners? Take a look at instamapper

http://www.instamapper.com/fe?page=demo

There are two things I could do for N810

1) Write client software to transmit location data
2) Add a web UI that's optimized for N810's 800x480 screen

Thoughts?

I was actually JUST thinking about whether or not it would be possible to do this... I was following the car ahead of me off on a camping trip and I thought it would be really cool if I could get updates of how far ahead of me they were, if they turned off to get food, etc without the need for constant calls/texts between the cars

I will try to make a client for N810.

In the meantime, if anyone is interested in tracking, you may want to know that InstaMapper works on $40 prepaid cell phones from Boost Mobile. See

http://www.instamapper.com/diy.html

What josiahg777 described wouldn't be difficult at all. There is even a wap interface, so you could track a cell phone using another cell phone.

I have a Cradlepoint PHS for access, but also have been working on "minigpsd" which replaces the built-in and saves everything as KMZ files. I use it with my harley and an OBDII interface to get real-time info (rpm, gear, engine temp).

After post-processing, the kmz (3.6 Mb for the whole 2+ hour ride) is http://www.zdez.org/Telem-0703.kmz but that is from a set of KMZ files saved real-time to the SD card (and built-in web server that does google-maps with updates and a few other things). Note after over 5 hours the battery is still 1/2 full.

I'm hoping to have a deb this weekend to post, earlier versions are at www.zdez.org already
