i guess a dual boot android 2.3.3 installation might work, is it possible without any bugs, non working phone features etc?

It'll be interesting to see what these small form tablets do to the phone market. I see that most new smart phones are huge, almost tablets themselves. Now i have a tablet I don't need a large phone as most of the time I'll be able to use the tablet instead. so i've just bought the smallest smartphone I can find. I predict this will be a common thing once these 7" tablets spread.

Thanks, unfortunately I couldn't get any of those methods to work with the n900. I tried installing android too and got a black screen on reboot. So I've lost patience in getting this to work.

On the Android side no app is needed. Just go to Bluetooth and click in the paired N900.

Don't use the scripts at the top of the post. Use jschan's later in the thread.

I've installed an app called BlueVPN on my Nexus 7. As far as i can tell it doesn't do anything VPNish, but it uses my N900 as a bluetooth modem {DUN}. So even without WiFi I am able to browse and reply to this question 
After fixing the USB port and now the ability to be used as a bridge between Nexus 7 and the interwebs there is no reason to abandon my N900.
Just now I notice something funny. Browsing and using an ssh client works fine. DrawSomething complains that there is no network!

android jelly bean doesn't yet support connecting to ad hoc networks (I use Joikuspot).
I've done a lot of searching obviously, and one way that some people have done it (to other non-n900 ad hoc networks) is by using bluetooth networking or apps specific to android phones.. I can't seem to get bluetooth networking to work with n900 and nexus 7, they pair together but I don't know how to get the Nexus to use the n900's internet connection, I've got bluetooth networking installed. I'd prefer a Joikuspot method ideally.
If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be a great help. If I can achieve this then I can see myself using the N900 for a while longer, otherwise it'll have to be upgrade time.
