Also, some apps and parts of the OS may be closed source and unavailable to run elsewhere.

I think thats where nokia is going to give lot of surprises. If they allow us to download the complete maemo 5 before the actual hardware with OS release, there wont be much hype of the release. And people wont be much excited. I think waiting for the actual release is better. Till then we can play around with the SDK. Its not that bad for developers. I have tried it and works for me..

Even once the hardware is released, there is no guarantee that you can run the whole OS in your PC.
So, bottom line, if you like to test Maemo 5, try maemo SDK or mer.
If you like to use maemo 5, wait for the hardware.
And please, learn to ask politely, the community is here to help, not to serve.
