A tax on the poor? Redneck 401k? What else is out there that people think of the lotto. More about lotto: http://www.moreaboutwinninglottery.com/

I personally don't understand why lotto has a "bad reputation". No one is forcing anyone to play it. And it isn't exactly expensive.

I have a punt at the lotto when the jackpot is high.

I like dutch betting on betfair as my little flutter, you don't get rich but it's more fun than a random draw and you do have a reasonable chance of coming out on top.

I'm going to try to be as logical as possible, although my conclussion is that I don't like games of chance of any kind involving money (also known as "betting").

I can see the allure that the Lotto has on many people. I think it's basically a ticket for a dream, although the chances of it coming true are ridiculously small. I think people pay to be excited about the prospect of being able to change their lives radically "for the better" by winning a ridiculous amount of money. Unfortunately for me, any fundamental knowledge of combinatorics and probability spoil this, as I see it for what it is (one of the worst investments anybody can make).

Do I think it's stupid playing the Lotto? Not necessarily, as long as you know you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than actually winning.

However, for me, the worst part about the Lotto is that it perpetuates the notion that money is a way to achieve happiness (materialism). It also encourages people to rely on dreams instead of actual hard work, which in my opinion is a very bad idea.

There is something which I actually dislike more than the Lotto, however, and that is the stock market. While superficially it would seem that the stock market is less than a gamble than the Lotto, and that it actually allows people to profit based on knowledge, research, etc, it overall doesn't. The stock market now is a vehicle for the rich to become richer at the expense of the rest of us. The biggest investment banks and private investors benefit from the electronic infrastructure and use algorithms that can buy and sell incredible amounts of stock many times a second, basically manipulating the market for the sole purpose of bleeding out cash from the pockets of other investors. Stocks are no longer a means for companies to fund their operations, and as a whole to benefit the overall economy and promote a prosperity everybody can benefit from, they are an instrument for speculators who haven't engaged on a single creative or productive act in their life to become super rich through manipulation.

So basically: Lotto bad, stock market worse.
