I found my old encoding methods lacking ...so to keep the thread short...use mediacoder, load up the preset for converting your nit...works great. use with mplayer on your nit, voila. simple.
The other preset is for transcoding your films into the media, industry and gov't standard for film preservation. All the aspects of the preset are not only open source but at the top of the current heap of best codecs. MKV X264 AC3 at settings that are just right for fluidity of fast moving scenes. You can lower the vid rate but don't go lower than 1500 or you start compromising film integrity and the point of standards to begin with. Comparably a standard good xvid needs to be at least at 3500 vid rate to compete with how good it looks with the x264 at 2000 vid rate. You can go up in vid rate but going up to 3000 would be comparable to xvid at 4500 vid rate. Great if you want your finest film preserved well. Any higher and you may not see a diff tho.
At 2000 vid rate the "average" is a GB per Hour of Film. So you can gauge how big a file will be thus.
It will improve the quality of your copies...but it cannot do miracles.
If you have truly crappy copies ....after transcoding will just look crappy (but at least they don't look truly crappy ).
So grab your best copies and enjoy.

Can you upload a 1 - 2 minute sample video for viewing?

Thanks.

I use vid4n810 and tablet-encode to transcode video to be played in n810. They work very well. They are scripts, and are based on ffmpeg or mencode, not sure at the moment. I may try to see if there are any adventages of the method posted here.

I've been using this site quite extensively lately for watching YouTube tv shows.

http://www.clipconverter.cc/

It works best using Tear web browser.

Transcode to AVI, also set it to 768 kbps and keep the 360P default setting.

Make sure to uncheck their new Auto Mode feature.

I've seen this site download a 23 minute show in two seconds and then transcode it in under 2 minutes after that.

Once it's finished, download the converted file.

For Mplayer to be at it's best, you'll need to terminate any running programs, and most likely, even go offline.

Give it a try and post your experience on this.

Cheers.

I stumbled upon a download online and was very impressed by the playback without changing any of the coding.

Media information:
624x352
Xvid
AVI
Stereo
Sample rate 48000 Hz
Bit rate 128 kb/s
Frame rate 25
Streaming bitrate was around 900

Here's a short sample of the video:

With cartoons, there's a little more flexibility with what can be done.

Here's a sample video that's 720x480 with a slightly reduced frame rate.

And yeah, Martin, I still have the deb for Garnet.
