I know I'm going to miss it but I need a better work horse, and neo900 will be too little too late.

Anyways, just ordered the Z3 Compact, delivery tomorrow.

Will be lurking here, though

Humhumhum...seems to me...
like you are regulating your n900 to play and experiment duties rather than your workhorse...which is probably better anyway...you'll probably enjoy it more consequently...
My n800's and n810's have gotten more enjoyable experimentation-al usage and exploration the moment I got my n900 (which I have been very cautious and gentle with) . And I know once I get my neo...the same will happen to my n900 (hopefully multiple n900's shortly...). So it's all good the way I see it.
I.I.W.Y. (if I were you ) ...I'd keep the old devices to play with and try all those things you may have been hesitant to do on your daily driver.

Not really, my n810 hasn't been used since I got the n900, it still works but I have no use for it.

Both the n810 and n900 have a bit of sentimental value for me, but maybe I should sell them now that people are looking for them (after all, both are in great shape)

Yes, the n900 keyboard is great, but...
- speed: checking something on a website quickly is not possible. The world moved on and has instant access
....

This is with latest CSSU thumb testing
This statement is very subjective but I went to verify myself how slow it really is:

Suppose a "quick website checking" involves initiating a search to find a potential website to enter and check (suppose you don't know site nor URL)

Typical example: input restaurant name + street + city in quicksearch, hit enter.

2.5G -> 11 seconds for results to show up after pressing enter key

3.5G -> 4-5 seconds

This is the time it can take the N900 to display my search results by instant search in MicroB, javascript disabled and cookies "ask first" , and non-javascript version of Duckduckgo, flash uninstalled.

(other conditions, 512MB swap, XMPP and Skype logged in, Mobile Vikings Internet, average quality reception, Nokia N900 showing only half or scale)

Next step is critical: as the time you spend waiting for a website to load depends heavily on the website. So you need your intuition to choose the website that is most likely to help you further instead of wasting your time by hiding information behind a "register now" wall and a lot of banners.

It is known that some websites use complex formatting that can bring down the whole N900 system to its knees for a while. But this is only when you expect it to run all the scripting and stuff.
If its just information checking you are after without logging on / off, your good w/o javascript and flash in 99% of the time.

It tried to bring my N900 down by opening as many various websites as I could and I received the yellow banner asking to close programs (to free RAM+ Swap) Once you have that condition, your N900 web browsing experience is likely to be less frustrating when it really counts.

Now we could finish and conclude that every website will load quicker on the latest octocore 3GB Android as in "instant access"

Luckily some progress has been made: capable web site programming and iPhone and Android phones become equipped with more powerful hardware, the mobile webworld seems no longer trending towards: "an iOS / Android app front for that web site" , a "mobile version" and "desktop versions" of web sites.

It seems that web developers have seen the light with some adaptive mobile friendly desktop websites. This starts to show in the big web sites first.
For example the browsing experience on Steam game fora or DPReview has vastly improved since 2009 on MicroB, actually providing a whole new experience for N900 users.

Nokia's web browser oriented approach combined with decent input devices (keyb, stylus, one finger zoom(!) ) seems to have been a right choice after all.

Of course the N900 lacks the processing power to offer a flawless experience to compete one on one with latest hardware when browsing on advanced scripted web sites and given the lack of updates security of the browser may be compromised.

But in many cases , when you want to actually do something with the data you find on the web: copy a telephone number, forward URL via IM, download and forward a file .. the N900 actually offers a very consistent experience regardless the weather.

I think by now you already start to notice that the Z3 is a few step forwards and a few steps back?

Yeah... About "mobile" version of various websites. I hate their guts. It was soooo lovely to go to e.g. eBay in MicroB and see the normal desktop version. On Jolla, I can switch to the desktop version temporarily, but once reloaded, it defaults back to the mobile version. In other words, the N900 provides a better browsing experience compared to a more modern phone. Browsing experience is more than just a speed of loading the page.

Agree, ever since the introduction of WAP the mobile web sites are not helping the forward evolution of mobile computing experience.
A few productive exceptions such as m.zoho.com set aside.

Let's not forget to take some screenshots while these mobile sites are still around so that we may have a good laugh with them after they are sent to the museum of hopeless technology where they will blend in well with this

Ok, we got to hand it, they did include a keyboard.

Yes, the n900 keyboard is great, but...
....
- battery life: having my 3rd battery in there now, it normally lasts the whole day, unless it starts acting up and starts draining it in half a day. More than a day is possible by not using it (what's the point)
- camera: never been impressed with it, missed some important events due to the camera app taking 10+ seconds to start, video sometimes consists of the first 5 seconds frozen image...
- wifi: never been able to share connection over wifi, always ended up locking the whole phone up

This is with latest CSSU thumb testing
The above can truly happen in many scenario's.
Battery drain can be an issue.
But there are ways around. Just close more stuff you won't be needing will give you a much faster camera startup and longer battery stamina and prevent missed calls.
I use the program Alarmed to switch 3.5G to 2.5G after one hour, that helps to save battery when connected to IM / Skype.

It is not in my habit to close open programs all the time but through the years I learned to accept this to be beneficial for the N900. I am more than happy that it allows me to close the programs myself instead of acting "smartphone".

Jolla is good in leaving programs open without much battery drain. But I can't copy paste or take better pictures.

After using other devices, including Androids the drawbacks of the N900 are a small price to pay for the extra's it has to offer.

A the time, almost 5 years ago, I was pleasantly surprised by the camera quality, but now its age is really showing. However in good light I find the color rendition and auto white balance more pleasing than on the Jolla and it does the job for document scanning.
