I concur with your guess.

That's the first time I've heard of that flightradar site. It's pretty cool.

I can just imagine this in a film with the evil genius selecting a flight and then clicking a 'take control' button

This is why I think it is important to give Jolla feedback. I'm not sure early adopters dismissing the comms woes as business as usual or just like any other company is doing Jolla any favours.

My suggestions to them, such as the daily percentage count of pre-order completion on Twitter, were given in all sincerity. I hope they consider involving the community more in their early stages.
