I was watching the Irreco (remote control app) demo ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HblSL0hG6Wg ) and can't help noticing the still cluttered apps listing on the N900's App Manager. I can still see sort of dependency files being listed, non-Maemo 5 apps, etc.

I'm sure some would like to see all these files but for the end-user, these dependency files are just junk. Who can fix this? Can this be fixed by the time end-users get their N900s? Please at least hide them and let them appear only maybe by switching to red pill mode, or something.

Also, what would it take to add a rating and comment feature for each app? Anything I can do to help?

Thanks.

Well, he's using Extras-testing/devel there, which is a very different beast than Extras proper.

True. Extras "Proper" does not show any of these dependencies.

Yes, you can rate and comment at http://maemo.org/packages/ - things which get sufficient positive ratings get into Extras "proper". Things to do to help:
  • Rate and comment if you have access to a Maemo 5 device (some might even be testable in the SDK, so that's an opportunity)
  • Help design the process
  • Help design the UI
  • Help test the UI
  • Convince developers that this isn't a burden and will improve the quality of the Maemo ecosystem for all
  • Be ready to help existing app authors with porting (larger XB-Maemo-Icon-26s, no user/ sections for anything which shouldn't be visible, proper human readable descriptions)

I was actually referring to end-users, being able to rate an app they have downloaded/installed as well as provide comments, both hooked to the specific version of the app, directly from the the N900.

Sure, I can help design the process. One of the missing pieces here is SSO. I haven't heard any updates on this. End-users should be able to register from their N900, and get access immediately to any maemo.org section.

From the forum admin's perspective, I can find a way to have tmo create a new thread for every released version of an app. End-users' ratings are mapped to the thread's rating, and comments are mapped to posts. I had a prototype somewhat working already before but a lot objected to it (let's not go there anymore ).

About convincing developers, well, I've learned my lesson. This 'process' should be done at background with minimal developer participation.

But then, if all the apps will be distributed via OVI, then I guess, the infrastructure is there already.
