So I really like the non-intrusive way that notifications are handled in Maemo. BUT....I still find that they often don´t stay up in the status bar long enough for me to click them. Is there a way to increase the amount of time they messages are displayed (maybe in some sort of .conf file or something)?

In your transitions.ini change the value for duration_out:

# Transition for notification previews
[notification]
is_cool = 0
duration_in = 400
duration_out = 450
