Look again, endso. The page starts with OS codenames. What it does not explain though is, where does the name Maemo come from? And how to properly pronounce it? I have always pronounced it as written, i.e. "ma-eh-mo".

From what I recall, the name "Maemo" comes from the name of the server where the code repository of the OSSO project was stored. So Maemo was soon the internal name at Nokia to refer to that new OSSO OS.

IIRC, "Maemo" was the output of a password generator, when giving that server a name.

I always thought "maemo" is a shortened form of "maaemo" which is the goddess mother earth in old finnsh mythology.
It is pronounced the same way.

Feel sad that all we are left with is a wikipage of codenames and cherished memories for devices that would never be again.

Going back to the original question, answering from a different angle, IIRC the honour of coming up with the name 'Harmattan' was bestowed upon Quim Gill [1] the Nokia Community liaison who helped build the maemo.org community [2].

I (and others ) still use our n800's and n810's daily...
hardly a memory...there are even a few 770 die-hards still pluggin' away. (That one I do pull out now and again...but purely to get that "feelin'")
