Hi guys! How is this coming along? Is there anything I could do to help?

E:

For example I could chip in a bit of money for you to buy parts you need, like the bluetooth keyboard casing for iPhone

At the moment I am waiting for my phone to be shipped, when it comes in I will:

-make a very simple dock to easily connect i2c pins
-hook up the TCA8424 in its evalution module (no need for a pcb) and see what happens
-ask for help on the software-side to make this proof-of-concept work
-program custom keyboard layout in the chip
-design and order custom pcb's
-make new OH with keyboard-casing
-be awesome

Currently I am about 100 euros in and that figure will increase when I am at the point to order pcb's. I wouldn't mind at all if people would support me money-wise, but I can not make any promises regarding building keyboards for anyone else.

What I can and will do however, is share everything I draw, make, order whatever. A lot of openness so to speak. A successful outcome would be an semi-idiot-proof instructions to create your own.

I also started something like this my self. But only to share my investigations for someone else interested as a kick-start.

I think that TCA8418 is more suitable for mobile devices. Full Qwerty with all the buttons needed (or fit) can be made from less than 60 buttons. TCA8418 has maximum of 80. It also releases phone's CPU from it's pain. Simplicity is cheap and beautiful. There is some drivers for linux but I leave this challenge for more experienced after I have one working model.

Right now I investigate what else components are involved. I've made circuit model using ExpressSCH. Keyboard has full layout of keys wired to columns and rows so that each key has it's own row-column -combination. Pullup resistors.

What else I need to complete this circuit?
Can TCA8418 be wired directly to the SCL, SDA, INT, GND?
If it can, what I do with RESET, Vcc?
I don't know what is inside Jolla but I think there isn't much since it's made to receive.

Also started on some CAD models with Inventor.

Everything you share dirkvl will somehow speed up the process. I won't stop until we have a product! What do you think about 8418?

Nice job! Pics! Btw it has internal pullups

Read the thread. Reset is not connected, the rest is.

I think the Evaluation Module is not for sale at Texas Instruments, so you can't program it. It is simpler than the 8424, but has less functionality (kind of the same thing). The 8424 is HID "compliant" which should take very little programming to get it working. Since I am no software-specialist, this is a major pro for the 8424 over the 8414.

I'm changing to 8428, it's cheaper, easier and has internal pullups but 8418 does not. What about 3-key at the same time. Just like Ctrl+Alt+Del... Manuals only said that keys must be wired other way but didn't mention anything about how. I guess they mean that any of these combination keys cant be on same row and column.

Look for anti-ghosting

If you are going for the tca8424, you will need the evaluation module to connect it and put a custom keyboard on it. And a launchpad to connect it to your pc. I have an extra launchpad if you don't want to wait two months on china
