Found this on SlickDeals, and I bought one. So it's real (provided HP actually ships it).

Here's the slickdeals webpage:
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3220862

I got mine by first signing up in their academic program (being an alumnus was adequate):
https://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s....do?aoid=35252
On returning to the tablets page, the prices were $99 for 16gb and $149 for 32gb.

Also, apparently Canada has retailers already at that price.

(Yes, I looked and another maemo.org thread had mention of this, but I thought it was worth a headline.)

Seeing that Best Buy has only sold 25k out of the 270k they had in stock and HP is suggesting all retailers lower their prices to $99/149, it shouldn't be hard to find one.

2 weeks ago Harvey Norman had an introduction to the TouchPad, and upon introduction the price arrived slashed!

I was contemplating getting one, but after these events, not sure/doubtful.

edit: the price is still low, never increased to correct price range.
Something tells me the retailers knew this product will fail before HP did, quite disturbing really.

What can you do with one of these? I mean, do they need binary blobs like the nokias or are there free drivers for all of the hardware components?

In case they can be put to use, do you know if/where they're going to offer it at a similar price in Europe?

$99 should be 70€ however even that is too much if you cannot install a real Linux on it

I just discovered that it was supposed to be available in Germany, France, UK and Ireland starting from july.
Unfortunately the press release says that is should have arrived in Spain (and Italy ) during the rest of the year, so I doubt I can find a fire sale over here
