Ok, now suddenly the device tells me to update again. What's going on?

I also had this a few days ago, after I updated. Open your jolla store, the message will disappear. Looks like a sync thing between store and update server.

Unfortunately it doesn't. The update shows up as available in the store, too, and when I tap on it, there's the usual screen that informs me about changes and invites me to do a backup.

I haven't gone further than that, it smells like trouble.

Here as well.
Did the pkcon update in terminal but just received a second update notification. Now it downloaded software and performed the update + reboot. Don't know what changed as everything went through the gui.

I got a second round of update request. Performed the update again. Don't know but could somebody from Jolla answer?

It happened to me too. I just followed the instructions. The only difference I could notice was that it actually rebooted after the second time. So i would say go ahead.

Now on 4th system update. Same routine and all logs to have loaded fine.
However, since updating to new version I noticed double tap is often unresponsive. Then I have had a few screen locks which require a reboot. Screen just goes unresponsive to any swipe but there is touchscreen sounds. Reboot sorts it though.
