This is all very good and exciting. but how do you get the phone working in ubuntu on n900? is this being done 'because it can' or is this an attempt to 'beat' maemo at their own game?

Its because we want ubuntu on our mids, alot of us could care less about phone functions.

I am also very interested in this! I am a 4 year linux user, mostly ubuntu and just ordered an n900 mostly for this purpose, having a full linux distro in such a portable device. Easy debian/native deb looks great and Mer/Meego promising but a straight up, updateable, full distro, phone or no phone is what I am after!

The phone function is more than making calls. I got my N900 since it was a Linux portable capable of 3G connections ("Internet everywhere").

I hope Nokia will help about this, so the device will be able to be fully fuctional even outside oh Maemo.
