If you can't get Ubuntu to work then install a virtual PC/Dosbox or anything and install XP as secondary OS.

Otherwise check your step once more. I'm pretty sure you missed something.

Mind to screen shot your Terminal, I'm not using Ubuntu to flash mine but I can help if you provide me enough description of your problems.

UBUNTU steps:

Download Flasher 3.5 from:

http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-d...-downloads.php

Extract flasher 3.5
Xterminal: cd /path/to/flasher 3.5

Turn off the device, and leave Xterminal open.

Download the firmware version you may wanting to reflash.
Put the File.bin in the flasher 3.5 directory (where all the flasher files are)

Press hold "U" and plug the USB into the device (of cause you have to plug the other end to the PC)
Keep holding until you see "NOKIA" do not let go of "U" yet. Keep holding.

Now to back to Xterminal and type:

sudo ./flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin -f -R

(the bin file is my device version, replace it with the one you've downloaded)

If it say: Suitable USB device not found, waiting

Unplug the USB from the N900 while holding "U" button still. Wait until you see a NOKIA logo and a USB icon in the top right corner.

Now it should be starting the installation....

I flashed mine in Debian with no hassles Sunday am. I used the Linux instructions https://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware without any issues; Debian was slightly easier possibly because I could use a root terminal. I'm no Linux guru but sometimes sudo doesn't work - I think if the script called needs extra permissions to function.

maximuscool states the device needs to be hooked in prior to starting the flasher script. I ran the script before booting the device into reflashing mode, and it worked fine- as the instructions state, run
Code:
sudo flasher-3.5 -F <firmware-image> -f -R
(change this to point to the firmware image you downloaded) and _then_ restart the n900 while holding the "u" key down, followed by plugging the USB cable in. It then ran automatically. From what you're describing, your n900 wasn't in flashing mode.

I am using ubuntu 9.10 x64.

look like you was able to install flasher. do following:
1. turn off phone and disconnect form USB. For be sure you can remove and put back battery.
2. run: flasher-3.5 -F FileNameForFiascoImage.bin -f
Fiasco image don't contain "Vanilla"
you will get something like this:

Don't you have to press the "u" on the phones keyboard to get it into flash mode for ubuntu?
