OK I don't know about the red light but today I discovered how to go into developer mode & use commands at the terminal (still trying to figure out why my email stopped syncing).

Anyhow, I just tried the instructions at the following page & it worked! No more camera sounds - yay!

Another solution is to use Camera+ which has same quality and options of the stock app plus some tweaks like disable shutter sound
