And it's a pain for me that I'm living in the outback.

But what I mean, the last competition in mind, people are voting for the application they like the most. If a application is only running at a MeeGo tablet, and the most voters have only a small maemo device to test the application...
Mmh, okay, who knows. But I would say applications, running on the N900 maemo device have a better chance in this contest. The bigger community counts. And at the moment is the MeeGo community only slowly growing because of the lack of a mass market Device.

MeeGo is the future and the way to go. But Maemo is the current community.

Zehjotkah, have you seen this: Qt - Introducing our new community sponsorship program

It seems to be more for concrete applications. But perhaps something like a coding competition coult fit their targets, too.
