Should be straight forward.
u-boot will kick-in with opened keyboard just before backup-menu.
For installation just see the u-boot thread and install desired packages.
But it is long time since I installed/configured ....

True indeed. I should check it out. Its only difficult to follow exactly what to do. There are so much different configuration (I have v53 kernel and backupmenu). The last thing I want it to break it and flash it again.

Make a full back with backup-menu and re-flashing is a piece of cake 
But I am sure you do not need to be afraid!
kp53 does not disturb at all
and backup-menu as well
so go ahead and install u-boot (if you want/need it)

I have a N900 with kernel-power version v53 and backup menu installed. With open keyboard I get the backup menu. The backup menu is very handy and saved me a lot of time.
But how to install U-boot with backup menu already installed? I want to test some other images on SD card. And how to start u-boot?
