Not that simple, read "scripts/setlocalversion":

Code:
dpkg-parsechangelog -l../../changelog | grep Version | sed 's/.*-/-/' | cut -b -9
It will set CONFIG_LOCALVERSION to that (because CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO is set to y).

I would say, use dpkg-buildpackage and later read up on all this. It is a tiny bit complex, and extends to more *nix structure knowledge (not to mention the extra tasks involved in cross-compiling.

My building the kernel is a bit slowsome (VERY old computer, VERY limited HD capacity), so if you want to experiment a bit yourself, I attach my rm581_defconfig that you may copy to arch/arm/configs/ and do the dpkg-buildpackage. It SHOULD include what is needed for NAT.

(They say this flag is stored in the CAL area, and that the CAL partition is now marked read only somehow. Well, no idea how. It was not protected in previous firmware releases because I know of at least one N9 that was bricked by writing to CAL.)

This means that even if you boot the vainilla or any other kernel once, you will be prevented from going back to closed mode until the next reflash

In any case, a reflash is usually necessary to avoid triggering the certificates problem, so no big deal for those that want to "live" using the open mode kernel.

But it is something to consider if you were not planning a reflash...
for your convenience here's the (tested to work on N950, by javispedro) openmode1.2-kernel with aegis-neutering patches:

http://maemo.cloud-7.de/HARM/N9/1.2/openmode-kernel/

Reports of it working on N9 highly welcome, though it *should* without any problems, even with a different kernelversion on N9, AIUI.
This time with complete changes in openmode.patch

Thanks once more to awesome 'anonymous' for providing this build.

enjoy
/j

ps: javispedro's comment: "most flawlessly working openmode ever. Maybe first time the whole thing is useful for everyday usage". I leave it for javispedro to elaborate on it. ;-)

hmm not sure, it completed the build here, but still hangs on Nokia logo.
I entered 'developer mode" which shows info on boot. it still said "normal boot".
no more time for some days here, going to the hospital, but keep me updated.
