Ubuntu for Phones enforces a strict, iOS-like App Cycle policy. Applications cannot run in the background like they can on Android unless they have been whitelisted to do so (e.g., as the default Music app).
...
Being firm about what applications can and cannot do is needed to offer a predictable and dependable battery life.
It is more than just that,
the types of hardware they are scoping for have some very
convoluted power controls for doing stuff like
enabling/disabling/power-cycling/hibernating various
hardware bits. I hurt my head on the Bay Trail when I found out
what it does with the USB power, and some of the other bits.
x
If your application does something like request (from background)
a device to "power on" that is presumed elsewhere to be dormant
you may end up with a segment of hardware going off into
an unanticipated power state when the device powers off
and somebody forgets to check all the circuit-breakers,
some of which are stored in non-volatile manners.
I have seen a powered-off Bay Trail drain its battery to zero.
Silently, and with no indication it was doing so, of course.
All because it had power control issues.
x
I am sure Canonical has seen this kind of thing with its many
convolutions around building Touch for Android.
With a desktop system it is not as serious an issue
as it is on a tablet, somewhat less so for a laptop.

Probably...but you never now.

Tablet is the worst idea with sail or ubuntu. They simply dont have the support needed for the web in this early stage.

Hope to see phones soon. Big Phones, BiG slider keyboard phones

That's enough web for me!

If you are happy, I'm happy

One example. I don't want a white window when reading the news and want to watch the related video news on that page. Please not open another app when looking at youtube or related sites or clicking link to play music. Never direct me to a mobile adjusted page ever(always give user option to change user-agent). I want to be able to play media files(if tablet cant play them. give me an option to auto change format), My running watch should be able to sync wireless and update my moves and present the details instantly(after sync OFC). Stuff like that...

these are the top of my list but could list 100 more if jolla, ubuntu wants a playbook

But an Ubuntu phone would be cool, or a jolla for that matter.

As reported by OmgUbuntu:
The Chinese news website “MyDrivers” claims that Meizu deal will not results in the launch of Ubuntu phones as most of us are expecting.

Instead, Meizu handsets will apparently retain their original Flyme OS UI, Alibaba integration and Android app ecosystem, but instead be based on Ubuntu (in some capacity, rumours lack specifics) rather than Android.
If that's true, then it is quite absurd - Ubuntu Touch could have had three selling points:
  • The UI (which I personally found quite confusing)
  • True multitasking
  • Linux app compatibility

The 2nd one was ruled out by Canonical when they changed it to the Android 'one app at a time' style.
The 3rd was was mostly ruled out by the use of Mir.
And now the 1st one is gone as well

Well done, Canonical Now the only question is how they are going to solve the 'app problem'.

EDIT: Not saying it is not a huge deal for Canonical - if it is true, then it is a big contract. It's just not huge for their customers.
