All of the Windows Media streams I've tested on vtuner work with mplayer, but I had to point it directly at the streams.

Maybe someone could write a little helper app to get the proper address to mplayer.

Some charitative soul, maybe. It would be very useful due most sports, talk and news radio and tv around the world are using the win media as stream format, as you can see easily on the vtuner list, whatever the country you pick.

As far as I know, the problem is that the file extension has to be asf, if I remember correctly.

Boy was I wrong. Media player gives me the file format error for all of the TVersity "restreams". It streams my music and movies well though. Not that that helps with the Win Media streaming....

akd, you CAN listen to WinMedia streams with OS2007 as I mentioned when you asked about it before receiving your n800.

You will need to install MPlayer and the enhanced GUI front end KMPlayer.
Then you can - bitrate/n800 cpu permitting - play windows radio and tv stations e.g.:
radio -BBC Word Service:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/me...fent_au_nb.asx

tv - Canal 13 out of Chile:
mms://streaming.entelchile.net/canal13

Just paste the above URLs into KMPlayer.
You can find more stations listed at sites such as:
radio:
http://surfmusic.de/
tv:
http://wwitv.com/portal.htm

The tricky part is obtaining the actual stream address (e.g. mms:....)

You need to right-click on their listed stream link [then "Details" or "Copy link location"] to obtain the actual stream address[with http://wwitv.com/portal.htm you can do this from the actual country list - with http://surfmusic.de/ you need to click on the "Listen Live" link first - with http://www.vtuner.com you'll probably need to go to the "Go To Website" link to dig it out as their "Play" is an 'asp' link that does not let you see the actual stream address]

So initially there is a bit of work involved but once you have the stream address you can add it to KMPlayer's xml based playlist.

I am hoping that with OS2008 this process will become easier.

The higher bitrate stations will be more like slideshows or not play at all. Not quite certain where the sweet point is - perhaps below 250K. The quality of your broadband connection is one restraint, the other is the n8x0's cpu. Nevertheless I have found quite a few tv and radio stations around the world and am having a lot of fun with KMPlayer[more info].

Hope you get it to work, akd.!

PS:
- KMPlayer can play video & audio using the osso-media-server, MPlayer, Flash & SMIL[just select them from 'Player' on the menu]
- from KMPlayer release notes on how to launch a channel:
double click on the tree view is broken in bora, select an item and press the 'select' key instead

Thanks again for the technique, but actually never worked for me...maybe I was doing something wrong trying to catch the stream address...nice will be if ITOS2008 could do this task easier.

Yes, obtaining streams can be tricky. Also they are likely to change over time.
Personally I would love a program for our NITs, switching intelligently between MPlayer & default Media Player, similar to these free Windows Programs:
[streams are 'commented on/kept up to date' by the community]
tv: JLC's Internet TV
tv/radio/etc: anyTV

PS:
- With JLC's Internet TV & anyTV you can right-click on a channel and then click "Update channel" to find the underlying stream url that you can then input into KMPlayer]
- from KMPlayer release notes on how to launch a channel: double click on the tree view is broken in bora, select an item and press the 'select' key instead
