Hehe...
of course!
The canadian intellectual property office..
ok...(time for very serious deadpan endso now...)
looks like it is pretty cut and dried Item 7a...
unless there are other bits needing to be covered I'm unaware of..
I took basic fundamentals of law back when I was a younger man..
( ok I can't be totally serious right now...there was this girl I rrreeeaaalllyyy liked taking law see.. ;D )...
but the finer points of trademark law I am not conversant with...
( I didn't get past 3rd year of law ...met this other girl in philosophy ;D )...

All in all it seems very financially manageable even if the cost were double or triple that Item 7a cost of $350 CDN...as long as the monies are ready and present when expiration is imminent and renewal is necessary... otherwise I do see a foreshadowing in the various "Items" of it being far far more costly to try to apply from scratch for a tm if it lapses and then one wishes to reapply ...lotta paperwork and a lotta palms to grease then....

Hmmm..is the Canadian TM (let alone the other TM's elsewhere mentioned soon to come due) "ours" free and clear?....
is it under our ..hm.."auspices"? ..
our control right now?
Was it given over to us?....
or is it handled still by Nokia until 2023 and then it is up to us to wrangle the transition by pleading with whomever(s) and much shuffling of papers back and forth, and communications, and missed communications, and costs that we must deal with to get the Canadian ( or for that matter any of the other pending ) TM "actually" in our hands ?
In which case once getting the "all clear to proceed..." then it would only be an additional $100 CDN to transfer the trademark.

If the rights to the TM are already in the hands of Maemo..
then it should pose fewer hurdles and a much reduced cost when renewing the Canadian TM...that's for sure.
If it is as clear-cut as it appears...
then in 8 years it should be a smooth electronic filing to renew and a very affordable payment and all's good.

I'm just ball-parking here...but even with palms to grease
( they call it bureaucratic civil servant filing, processing, etc...ach! well someone has to do all that fun stuff eh? )
and worst case scenarios...
the most outrageous cost would be a couple of grand...
but I frankly expect it to be between $500 CDN at absolute optimistically (rainbows shootin' outta butts here) best (it cannot get lower)...
a pragmatic $1000 CDN ...
and a possible extreme of $1500 CDN ...(all this is not knowing finer details of course...otherwise I could narrow things down more finitely)

I need to be a bit careful with finances at the moment as several major expenses have clocked up at once. All being well I'll try to chip in next week when I know where I stand, probably thursday or friday.

juiceme: feel free to pm me to remind me

Simply put: no, we're just allowed to use existing TMs unless we claim ownership.
With the Maemo Brand Agreement that Nokia and Hildon Foundation have signed, all TM rights were transferred. But that's just an internal agreement. Officially, things remain as is in the registers.

What matters is that the brand is protected (until 2023 in Canada), even if we don't claim ownership.
Start saving pennys for that now... hmm, I guess by then most of us will be using other gadgets. Who knows... but if not, I still believe the money would be better spent for EU-renewal 2025. That's all we need, if any.

Ach!...kiddin' me? ..almost 10 years now and I'm still using my n8x0's....
20...40 years (if I'm not dead by then) ...I'll still be using my n8x0's and n900...
But yea...I'll probably be using a new device too by then...
Mah Neo900!!!
Snap!
Ooooooh yeah!
hehe....

I'll definitely start puttin' pennies aside [and not just for the CDN TM ...but for the Euro TM as well] for the year 20_ _ ...
Especially after the obvious potential you just mentioned that there may possibly be even fewer of us left by then here at maemo...which is entirely possible.

No problem, as it looks we have raised enough to get the EU trademark refreshed.
More than enough, actually, thanks to a few extremely generous donations received lately...

NOTICE!

We have received enough funds for the ongoing EU Trademark refreshing, and currently need no more donations towards this cause any longer!

Thanks for everybody, the community spirit we have is awesome

We managed to raise 3451.43 euros in just a bit over 5 weeks time, which I think is marvellous!

Wow... stellar... really impressive this is...

Some statistic:
Code:
Donations / €	| # | Sum / €
     <20:	| 10 | 127,40
      20:	| 11 | 220,00
    25-30:	| 8 | 216,82
    40-50:	| 6 | 279,54
   100-200:	| 9 | 1.113,17
  500-1.000:	| 2 | 1.494,50
----------------------------------
    Total:	| 46 | 3.451,43
     Avg.:	| 1 | 75,03
That's about ~1.000 € more than what's needed...
