either thru a real push based email client or another option
is to poll the server every 5 minutes or so, but 'cron' or 'at' is not
available

Aaah, tracked you down

If you look in the email settings you can do a scheduled pull of mail - shcedule allows start and stop, days applied and period. I tried it today but missed the bit where you enable the schedule.

I may have another try tomorrow.

what i'm currently do is use squirrelmail's browser based client .... i guess even w/ the schedule ed email functionalit i'm still not alerted when a new email arrives

No, you won't be. Not like you would be with a LAN connected mail client.
