yes you need to do that via ssh. Again, read nemo wiki for guides.

So I followed the instructions here on my N9 to see what would work, but after all was completed and rebooted it was still just Nemo. Any idea what I might have done wrong?

I have problem removing Nemo repos as well . I'm thinking of waiting for a more detailed guide like Ubiboot guide or wait for a image (if there will be any)

Oh, perhaps the issue is that my Nemo image is old (pre-Wayland). I'll try a newer image and report back.

As per the legal questions asked:

I am not a lawyer, but the EULA expressly states in point 4 in License restrictions that the licensee is prohibited from:
Copying any elements of our Software, including code, graphics, sounds, our name, trademark, logo or other proprietary information, without our prior written consent.
That means that I would suggest going to Jolla to ask for an expressly stated, written permission that we are free to port SailfishOS to the N9, otherwise we might be violating their copyright.

Yeah as was said, nothing to get worked up into a lather about...
At least a few more devs will be able to test "on device" now*, rather than via the emulator.

*but only for certain applications

I posted the source article that this article draws from yonks ago...
It's quite possible that the source article was very misleading, still waiting to get some clarification from Jolla.

The irony that an "open" device like the N9 has issues w/ drivers that aren't open is not lost on me.
It's not like why all that ended-up happening hasn't been carefully explained in great detail many times before.
