It still puzzles me why they're there on pure Android phones*. Android has worked perfectly well without buttons for years. One of the reasons I buy Sony phones is because they DON'T have buttons. You can use them any way up, you get less bezel and if Sailfish ever becomes a viable OS for daily use you've got a device without the buttons in the way.

* Except for Samsung who seem to think they need a home button just like an iPhone to attract the clueless.

Okay that's a new one.

Can you share any details or are you under NDA?

yeah, SONY is known for their small top and bottom bezels
Anyway, I actually prefer buttons. Sliding up to reveal buttons and then press back (or any other) is just one more step. And most phones have big enough bottom bezel to accommodate buttons.

Ha Ha, I can understand how from the point of view of style and some nice functionality that it is cool to have a phone that relies on swipe gestures and has no hardware buttons. But I just look at it as a feature I can utilize to my liking. There are apps that let you redefine what the buttons do. For example, I used to have long press on the home button bring up the flashlight. Came in real handy. Further all the buttons usual functions (home, back, recents) can be replaced with swipe gestures using an app like GMD gestures. Although they generally require root.

Here is a screen shot of my settings using GMD gestures. I use a gesture along the edge, for example, in place of using the home button. I'm always trying new settings as they are easy to change.
