Its still too early to know what Samsung wants to take this. But smart homes is one way and that is for sure an exiting road...

Well, that's simple to answer really.

It is exactly the same thing which makes SFOS attractive; libc instead of bionic. That's the important thing, the rest is just decoration.
And having e does not hurt either.

You might say exactly the same about Sailfish.

What's exciting about it? It is Yet Another Linux-Based Platform™. The same thing that makes Sailfish attractive.

What does SailfishOS have besides the YALBP ( )? Ah, so much.
  • swipe gestures
  • double tap to wake up
  • move back by swiping (this is also what makes BB10 exciting and trust me, it captured everyone I showed Jolla to)
  • UI adjusted for bigger screens - by pulley menus (this is something Android with its 8" phones surprisingly lacks)
  • remorse timers
  • the UI - some might like it, some not, but it is definitely something that makes the system special (and judging by the design path Apple had taken at around the same time, it is the way to go)
  • the community - this is often overlooked, but it's something that is important - for example webOS was a great innovative system with many exciting features, but its community could not remotely compare to the Maemo one and it was quite apparent (and still is)
  • being the "only mobile OS from Europe"
  • all the hipster **** about being different
  • the connection to hardware innovations - TOH
  • development in the open (TJC)

I would generally split the factors (not just in SailfishOS case, but in general) in three categories:
  1. the system underneath (not exciting to normal users) and the community around it
  2. the UI and innovations in this area
  3. the 'hardware - software' connection

Let's now take a look at some other systems:

BB10
  1. QNX, but system closed
  2. innovative UI, uses gestures, BB Hub
  3. hardware keyboards, BB Passport - symbiosis of SW and HW

FFOS
  1. HTML based
  2. -
  3. -

iOS
  1. -
  2. easy to use, gestures, innovative approach in the app switching on tablets
  3. the exclusivity

In the case of Tizen, I can see only the glibc argument (a good one, though) and maybe Enlightment (all from the first category), but other than that, nothing. What I would find exciting:
  1. development in the open (something like TJC), voting for features
  2. UI innovations that would justify choosing a new platform
  3. some specialty - for example make the Note Edge functionality exclusive to Tizen and tie it with it so good that one could not imagine using Tizen without the stripe

But well, I don't expect to see any of it, considering how much time it took to get to this point (and considering Samsung's latest intentions to return to Windows Phone).

mmh, for me it goes like this:

1.) the internals; "the system underneath" --> yummy , this is the thing that really matters! and I love it (mostly)
2.) the eyecandy; "the UI and innovations in this area" --> Could not care less (but nicely done in SFOS)
3.) the HW; --> Neat and usable, good for hacking (except I hate qualcomm and they should burn and die)

For me,

1) It's not iOS, Android or Windows.

Everything else, including your 1-2-3 above, is just an additional bonus.

To be honest, none of those. They IMHO all look alike in the same uninspiring way that dates back to the days of Symbian.
