Is the stock email client on N900 capable of using gpg?

No, it doesn't have gpg integrated.

The best you can hope for is to install gpg and decrypt the emails manually.

You can get mutt for N900 and do both S/MIME and GPG. Configuration is significantly labor-intensive, but you can organize and filter to your heart's content along with procmail, fetchmail, and friends.

If you were wishing for Modest to do encrypted mail, the library underneath (Tinymail) has some level of support, but Modest itself does not.

Claws-Mail can do.
