There is package in repos, call-locker or something like that, with claim to lock screen just the moment it got unlocked by incoming call (to avoid accidental accepting/rejecting when device is in pocket, or bag, or...).

I haven't tested it myself, so use at own risk.

As for recaller, I've avoided it for long time due to same problem reports + inactive developer + messy code, but once, I really needed this program. Now, after using it for more than a year, I must say that it "worksforme", and haven't causes any of mentioned issues. Sure, it can be buggy at hell, but if you use it only for dictaphone/automatic call recording, it does it's job rather flawlessly.

I would gladly welcome someone picking up it's development, or doing re-write...
