Hi all

Anybody got any news yet if we will be able to assign ring tones to contacts? I understand that there has been pressure on Nokia to add this facility on the next update?

Cheers

Zan

No news, doubt it will be part of the PR1.2 update. So if this is important to you then you may be in for a longish wait

so none has dived this deep into the os?

in theory it could be done by making a new field to add to a contact "ringtone"

and 'on incomming call' check 'caller id' with 'contact number' and run 'ringtone'.

but that's just in theory, wouldn't know where to put it, let alone code it

There is an enhancement request at Bugzilla, that has been moved to Brainstorm. Most likely the target is Harmattan, not the Fremantle release, so you probably won't be seing it in Fremantle updates...

The Address book and phone software is closed Nokia stuff, so the community can't fix this on our own.

Well its possible to block numbers which means you can read and see whos calling. And you can add fields to the contact manually so in theory it can work. You assign a song/tone whatever to the contacts field if that number call play other file.

Good idea for custom application. In normal profile disable sound and play ringtones by script, which checks for incoming calls. I think, that there is appropriate DBUS messages for
- incoming call
- user replyed the call
- the call was stopped
There is access to accelerometer, so it is possibe to mute sound when device is turned screen down.

Yes, but it's not clear how to switch the ringtone on the fly. Also it's not completely clear if you had to detect and handle end-of-ringtone condition.
Getting number from dbus, and getting contact from addressbook is more or less simple and quite feasible. Entering a special magic value to the note field of a contact also isn't any problem, like
"<X-group>friends</X-group><X-ringtone>/foo/bar.wav</X-ringtone>"
