Yes, the pole makes sense.
Actually more than one:
- device prevalence among user/developers, used to determine how many users have each device, and how many developers are willing to work on particular device.
- possible future developments, depending on above situation.
I own N810, and are naturally interested as both user and developer (provided that there are enough developers willing to work on it as well).

If we want to keep Maemo/Hildon UI live, we should find a way to enable it to run on other open devices, or devices that are not locked. Since Nokia has stated that they would not release new Maemo/Meego device, we should try to find a new hardware.

Maybe we could rebuild the Maemo user experience on Android/Meego OS Core, which may enable it for further development?

We need to add the MIUI interface to Maemo/MeeGo core... then we'd see adoption. Not the other way around.
My proposal:
1-Go back to the drawing board and create a full user experience.
2-Use aesthetics and elements from iOS, Android, MIUI, WebOS, QNX, Moblin etc.
3-Finalize the MeeGo core (support most features).
4-Tie in this new user experience to the finalized core.
5-Polish the SDK/Qt libraries.
6-Slap this on available hardware (or manufacture your own).
7-Smoke a cigar, enjoy life, forget about money.

is that such a good idea, right now?
i believe the whole point of timoph's post (with the three ongoing developments) was to show that the community has a certain focus.
but eventually it is a free world right?
