Inspired by an earlier post, my question is, would you be willing to donate $10 for the purpose of a fundpot, to be used for:
  • Devlopment of Maemo for other higher spec devices
  • Creation of some key apps missing from Maemo but popular on other platforms
  • To inspire skilled programmers working on other platforms to develop for Maemo also

When you hear about all the nightmare stories from developers working for Apple (spending months in development of an App to only have it rejected on some petty grounds, and with the likelyhood that Cydia will eventually be blocked out from Apple devices completely) I feel the Maemo community could offer a much nice development process. Nowhere else do we have willing enthusiastic volunteers willing to test software.

Maemo is unique. Nokia clearly dont seem to want to spend anymore on Maemo (money or time), so perhaps there are things we could do to?

We already have skilled dedicated group working on the CSSU, but we need to encourage programmers from other platforms to also develop apps if preservation and bettering Maemo is to happen.

If it meant anything, I would easily give $10 if it mean development would continue down a path that benefits me.

Well between you and I, thats $20 already

Well I think there are a huge number of nice devices out there I would like to see Maemo running on including the Droid 2 which I quite like.

I'm sure there would have to be some kind of community decision process with respect to spending money from the pot, but I suppose priority to ensure it lives is porting to a higher spec device.

With 55k members on Maemo.org, it shouldnt be too hard to get some funds and offer an incentive package for development to high spec devices.

We could have an initial funding stage with those who donate being allowed first test, followed by a Stable release for purchase by remaining members.

Get the right idea and the right people around it and funding shouldn't be an issue.

Ps: sure, I'm up for $10 or more to support the right ideas and people behind it.
