I'm honored yet hope that you do not do so because of my often opposing stances to the wishes, whims yet yearning to be on something different than iOS and Android seems to be hampered by my lack of trust in any ongoing projects that have yet to surface as embraced projects by more than just us enthusiasts.

Simply stated, I've somehow gone from geek with an useful 770 that fit needs that I had been wanting and shoved them neatly into my pocket, or that guy with the N810 that loved every moment of hacking the OS and reflashing because Nokia was still interested in Maemo or what we had to say as a community.

Now? Nothing. We do not have a company that backs our rebellious nature. We don't have a leviathan in our corner, even partly now. And unfortunately, I've seen far too many community projects become stuff we all initially agree to as desirable, but they fall to the wayside because making a device, an ecosystem and an OS is damn hard. For those reasons, I applaud Jolla for delivering (now) two phones, attempting to scale up to an x86 tablet only to gamble somewhat.

It happens. We got the 770, N800, N810, the N900 and the N9. We got the Jolla 1, Jolla C and the Jolla Tablet.

We've rallied behind the Neo900. We've looked at alternatives and shared our hacks and our experiences. Heck, we've probably backed things that subconsciously we knew would fail but our want for some alternatives still exist.

It's that I fear that my faith has waned.

Camp Gerbick, eh? I hope it's a cheerful place that encourages diverse options and understands that we all have fun in different ways. Oh... and plenty of beer. Gotta have the beer.

Just to provide another - less bleak - perspective

I am mainly interested in the N900 and I see the most positive developments on kernel level.
Starting with a fully working kernel that supports all hardware you can just build on top of that whatever you need.

Not saying that is an easy task, but if you compare the N900 with other phones you will have a hard time finding something that is so well supported in getting rid of the binary blobs and maintained.
Latest updates are added only two weeks ago.

I am still excited about this phone and looking forward to new developments.

First .."camp gerbick " I see as the bastion of sober second thought.
Secondly ..your history of devices is a mirror to my own ..we both have seen a great deal happen here ...
I also have hope for our future ...
I'm just saying ..that the time for talk of wishing or endless debate ...and I mean ENDLESS DEBATE..
such topics as this have been ongoing here for more than half a decade now!!!!!!!
Enough is enough ..
I think it past time to actually do something tangible than this perpetual mental masturbation ....
To coin a phrase ...
It's time ...
To sh#t....
Or get off the pot....

Third ...
I do not see things grimly....
It is what it is...
Yes great development is occurring ....
Is it enough?
I for years thought so ...
No longer...
Our devices are aging....they will not last forever ..
We either are able to migrate our os's to mainstream devices...
Or it is certain extinction for maemo....
Plain and bloody simple.

Regarding putting our own UX on a pre-existing Android device, whatever happened to stskeep's cuteboot project? http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=96411 and https://archive.fosdem.org/2016/sche...oot_slides.pdf. I was quite excited when I first read about it.

I prefer the phrase

It's time to fish or cut bait...

Regardless, if a device ever materializes I hope it is more of a linux handheld device that happens to make phone calls then the other way around...
