I removed .mozilla folder, but still doesn't work.
Was it the QT or GTK+ one you installed?

you just need to uninstall firefox first. I didn't lose any plugins etc. when I did that and then installed the beta.

might not be the latest nightly build but release notes state it's based on firefox 4 which is as up-to-date as I'd like to be.

just trying it with 4 tabs now. struggled with the bbc to start with but scrolling improved the longer firefox was left open, so maybe something was happening in the background. scrolling issues were the main problem with previous releases for me, so this is much improved, but will see how it goes today

Just go here with your N900 browser:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/m/beta

It will add the repo and download & install Firefox.
Been there, done that... It kept giving me the Firefox 1.1 that I already had. You need the .deb files to get Fennec.

You are obviously doing it wrong
As have already been said, remove previous version of Firefox then reinstall.

I have Gecko/20101006 Firefox/4.0b7pre

Is it red letters on light yellow background? Somewhere XML/XUL file (or language pack) is corrupted. Uninstall and then install again. I experience no such problem, though fennec 4 beta is quite buggy (especially together with out-of-date extensions).

I'm not sure, but Fennec might be ported to Qt because Qt is considered cross-platform... The same reasons why MeeGo moves from GTK+ to Qt. Desktop Firefox is getting ported to Qt, too.

I should have installed GTK, but now I'm not so sure. Could it be QT version?
Thanks

Have no idea.. but you might wanna try to install the GTK+ version. I think it should be more stable.

GTK version installed again, .mozilla folder cleaned, but still the same error.
I'll go and check bugzilla.
