Well I thought that with the N900, I would finally be able to play the ipod videos in podcasts on the net. It would seem not. I tried http://feeds.theonion.com/OnionNewsNetwork today in gpodder (nice app, get it now if you do any podcasts). The video flashes on screen and then drops out with an unsupported format message. Bug? Feature? Any idea why?

thanks,
Frank

mp4s should work...

Ok, this one doesn't. mplayer (kmplayer for nice GUI) can play it though.

Code:
Playing LOST_FRIENDSTER_ITUNES.mp4.
libavformat file format detected.
[mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0xcc0880]max_analyze_duration reached
[lavf] Video stream found, -vid 0
[lavf] Audio stream found, -aid 1
VIDEO:  [H264]  640x480  24bpp  29.970 fps  1603.0 kbps (195.7 kbyte/s)
Clip info:
 major_brand: mp42
 minor_version: 1
 compatible_brands: isommp41avc1

Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Unsupported PixelFormat -1
Selected video codec: [ffh264] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg H.264)

==========================================================================
Opening audio decoder: [faad] AAC (MPEG2/4 Advanced Audio Coding)
AUDIO: 44100 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 127.9 kbit/9.07% (ratio: 15991->176400)
Selected audio codec: [faad] afm: faad (FAAD AAC (MPEG-2/MPEG-4 Audio))
So it looks like its a somewhat funky mp4.

Tried the same video on a Droid (not mine, I'm not cheating ), and the video plays but only the top half, the bottom half is green.

schettj, you played it under mplayer? The CPU couldn't keep up, the video and audio were out of sync.

yes I noticed that too, but at least it played

mplayer -fs -framedrop LOST_FRIENDSTER_ITUNES.mp4

from a desktop ssh session over usb gets it to stay in sync with massive frame drops, and also emits plenty of errors:

You know, it must have been a fluke (time will tell), the video from 1/4/2010 plays fine on either media player or mplayer. The file size is less than half as well.
