You are probably trying to find it with the file manager, but that won't work - it only shows the sub-tree under /home/user/MyDocs. Use the terminal.

LOL. Nice. I know nothing about using the terminal. (I haven't messed with Linux in YEARS)

Any recommendations / suggestions / help?

Hm, that's going to be tricky then :-( Perhaps try an alternative file manager like EmelFM2 or GPE FIlemanager. And browse/search the wiki for various bits of useful information.

Ok, I installed EmelFM2 already and found that folder - it's empty.

True, the GUI application manager cleans it after installing a package :-(

You can still browse the repository and download packages manually though. You'll probably want to make sure you get their dependencies too. You can find those by running "apt-cache depends <packagename>" in the terminal, or by looking up the package in http://maemo.org/packages/. Some dependencies come pre-installed in the firmware image and won't be in the extras repository, http://maemo.org/packages/ will subtly hint ("Diablo SDK") if that's the case.

Not ideal, I know...

Perhaps a better approach would be to clone the system to a card (see here, or use the newer version here) and backup that on your PC.

I can download the bin files individually.

Where / which one do I download? For instance, here's the Canola2 page.

http://maemo.org/packages/view/canola2/

Separate question - is there a good encryption program (like PGP) available for the 810?

GnuPG is pre-installed. The stock email client doesn't use it, but there's claws-mail that does.

What about encrypting and decrypting files in general, not just email?
