So I'm trying something new again.

I installed Skype today.

I would like to video chat with another friend who has also has Skype but on her laptop computer.

Is this possible?

If not, what might be a good alternative?

I do have a SIP account.

Kind regards.

AFAIK the Maemo (4?) version doesn't support video.

SIP video can somewhat work under perfect circumstances, but those are notoriously hard to get right. XMPP (jabber, google talk etc) is much easier to get working, the only requirement is the two clients having at least one common codec (before anyone asks: I haven't a clue about compatible win32 clients).

So Skype has almost nothing special to offer when compared with Google Talk.

Is this correct?

It's been around a bit longer, and as such probably has more users. I have a few relatives who have learned just enough to connect to Skype, and probably don't want to learn another video chat system.

But Skype on Diablo definitely doesn't have video support, yes?

I wish I could remember... I was playing around with Skype on my brother's N810 some years back, but he sold that machine a long time ago. I know voice worked, I just can't recall ever doing video with it.

Skype on n8x0 doesn't support video.

I just tried to use the "internet call" app that comes installed with maemo, it was able to connect to my google account, download contacts and even start a call to my desktop. After answering on the desktop the tablet kept ringing but the desktop said no video or voice was available from the tablet.

The google talk codec that came with maemo4 is probably too old to work with newer codecs. Maybe two n8x0s can call each other though...

Oh wow.

So I totally missed out on all of the fun stuff 5 years ago.

Talk about being a little too late to the party.

Yeah you missed out, Addison.

I used to videochat with Gizmo5 between two N810s.

Also used to be able to use DialCentral + Gizmo5 in lieu of a phone for free. You could even use the Nokia SIP client instead of the Gizmo5 client.
