Hello I've been testing my new (bought used) N810 for 4 hours, and i can't install mplayer (and other apps) with the application manager, even in console with apt-get it displays something like:
libgcc1 >=1:4.2.1 and something like "libgcc1 is the the most recent version"

anybody knows how to deal with this apt-get issue?

I'm thinking in a firmware upgrade but firmware upgrades make me think in catastrophe & bricked stuff.

How long should a normal firmware upgrade last in minutes (or hours)

(I hope seconds )

Well, which firmware are you currently running?
Where do you install mplayer from?
And "something like" is always a bit vague - exact errors are welcome in order to help. :-)

If you bought the device used I would recommend you flash the firmware to OS2008 Diablo. You have no idea being used what state the previous user left the device in. They might have deleted needed packages on the device.
It takes several minutes to flash the firmware since it is done via USB. It takes longer to get all the software and read the instructions. I have flashed the firmware for my N800 and N810 with no problems. The hardest part is remembering the button pushes needed to start the flash.

Looking at the repositories I can only see this version of libgcc1 in the Fremantle repository. You must be looking at the Fremantle repository. You need to change this in the Application Manager to look at Diablo. Fremantle does not support the N810 or N800 devices.

I'm in same situation...
I tried to install mplayer from N810 Application manager but the message "Application packages missing: libgcc1 >=1:4.2.1) was displayed.
I've already updated to diablo.

I read this thread carefully but I can't find out how to do it. If you can, please explain more detail? I have to use X term?

I was getting similar "Application packages missing" error messages whenever I tried to install anything.

Bruce Forsberg's answer turned out to be the solution, but he didn't give enough detail for me to fix it.
  1. In the Application Manager, I had to open the menu and tap on "Tools", then "Application catalog...".
    • This brought up the list of software sources.
  2. I tapped on "Maemo Extras", then on the "Edit" button.
    • Note that there were two entries for this "Maemo Extras" and "maemo Extras" (note the lowercase 'm')
  3. Changed the value of the distribution field from "freemantle" to "diablo"

I've never intentionally modified these software catalogs, but I install and uninstall software regularly. So, I guess something added the "freemantle" automatically.

it happened to me too.
I had the repository "Maemo Extras-Testing "
with "fremantle" as distribution
I replaced with "diablo" but it gave an error 404 repository not found
I disabled this repository and everything worked fine
