Right. But you are on a handheld device with a touchscreen. The same finger press to do a tab key would be similar for tabbing through fields.
I agree that tab needs to be a function, just trying to see where within the mobile paradigm that this device/platform is supporting.

How about aligning emails, or any other text come to that, without relying on font widths being similar at the other end?
Coding in python requires consistent indenting and tab can help with that.
Ctril+i seems more compatible to me with typing than fingering the bar in xterm does.
I have remapped:
fn+left->escape
fn+right->tab
fn+c->pipe
fn+z->tilde
by modifying
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/nokia_something/rx-51
Tabbing is much faster than typing, reaching up and pressing the new area, typing again, reaching up and pressing the new area, etc.
