The Program Manager tells that there is a new thumbs version to install, though apparently I have this version setup already (as shown in settings /product info).

When I try to install it anyhow, it fails with error message shown in the attached screenshot.

When trying to do apt-get install dist-upgrade a myriade of packages would get removed, so I canceled it.

There seems something wrong in my repository settings. Please clarify if you can.
Disable cssu-devel and extras-devel repos and try again

After doing some very basic operations (installing apps and removing stuff as per the wiki), my "About Maemo 5 Community SSU" button was only telling me "Community SSU meta package not installed".

And now, possible after trying to update the repos, the button is gone altogether ("Operator Name Widget" is still there though).

Did I misbehave somehow (I was really nice and cuddling, I promise) ?

I also have the data roaming going crazy by kicking in whenever my "internet connection" is used, but that's probably unrelated and I'm gonna open a new thread about it.

I would start your own thread for that.

You could have installed buggy software from one of the many testing or development repositories.
The diagnoses with turn off topic for this thread.
I would start by listing your catalogues and which applications you installed.
Please also note the disclaimer at the top of the "Perfect N900" wiki page.

Thanks - I tried this. Then I removed all repositories except the 2 thumbs repositories. With this, the list of missing packages only got longer. So back to my repository list of above. Does somebody have a "clean" list of repositories at their /etc/apt/sources.list* that apply for thumbs2 only (and a separate one of CSSU stable). (I rechecked the Wiki, no information found by me at this time.)

This possibly also applies to me:

Reason for Edit: I added a new thread for my repository request:

I reflashed my phone as I bricked it somehow and installed CSSU-Thumb. I was wondering if I should enable all the repos in the app catalog after installing CSSU-Thumb or leave it as it is.

You might want to have a look at this thread, there is one experience posted in regards to which repositories to use:
