I'm not doing this for kicks. The N900 died on me and could not be rebooted (and my life is in there).
Anyhow here are the steps:

1) Removed battery
2) ran "flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f"
3) press 'u' and connect USB cable, N900 starts
4) on computer
Code:
flasher v2.5.2 (Sep 24 2009)

Image 'mmc', size 255947 kB
        Version RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA
Suitable USB device not found, waiting.
USB device found found at bus bus-0, device address \\.\libusb0-0001--0x0421-0x0105.
Found device RX-51, hardware revision 2204
NOLO version 1.4.14
Version of 'sw-release': RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_MR0
Booting device into flash mode.
Suitable USB device not found, waiting.
After that nothing works anymore. Disconnect/connecting with or without 'u' pressed; flasher stays waiting.
So the USB is recognized than the N900 is rebooted by the flasher and after that the N900 cannot be found anymore and the update is not working.

Anyone?

if your life is in there, obviously you have to start a new life cause flashing sweeps the internal drive clean

What did you saw on the device's screen at that moment? Is your battery fully/partially charged? What OS you are running? Is there any notices about new device connecting through usb?

P.S. don't flash the VANILLA anyway. Use COMBINED image instead!

Im having the exact same problem. Im using Windows XP 32bit. I followed all the instructions to the letter.

I keep getting a message saying

"Booting device into flash mode.
Suitable USB device not found"

I have seen this problem around these forums and I have yet to find a solution yet. Anyone know what to do?

Hi all, i'm having this same problem and have run it on win x64, x86 and get the same errors even using libusb to install the drivers

1) Removed battery
2) ran "flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.41-1.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f"
3) press 'u' and connect USB cable, N900 starts
4) on computer

Code:
flasher v2.5.2 (Oct 21 2009)

Image 'mmc', size 255947 kB
Version RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA
Suitable USB device not found, waiting.
USB device found found at bus bus-0, device address \\.\libusb0-0001--0x0421-0x0105.
Found device RX-51, hardware revision 2101

Version of 'sw-release': RX-51_2009SE_21.2011.38-1_PR_MR0
Booting device into flash mode.
Suitable USB device not found, waiting.

After much ado...i decided to move to a linux platform to try it out and i get the same error even while running it in sudo mode.

I have also seen the cold flash option, but it was only advised to do it if a certain boot-loader test failed, mine passed which means i do not need to continue along that path. So please what am I missing? Can anyone help?

Nokia Suite is known to make problem while trying to flash n900, so remove it from start-up list and restart PC...then try again.

Also, make sure that USB cable goes all the way in USB connector on n900
(as much as it is possible..if you know what I mean)
