These uri-s are completely legal and completely different:

"sip:+16045555555p333@my.domain"
"sip:+16045555555@my.domain"
"sip:some_string_with_letter_p_and_others@my.domai n"

The same thing is probably acceptable in skype. What you're asking to implement would break existing, correct functionality. That's why it cannot be "fixed".
I agree with you as to what is happening, but the problem is not the dial string but the function of the phone.
as described in this bug https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8344 the dial string for a address book entry +16045555555p333

should look like this:
"sip:+16045555555@my.domain" "DTMF333" after dialling teh phone should just send the DTMF of the numbers after the "p" this is how my previous palm phone and my Panasonic land line works.

Colnago, I am still not with you here but hop to get it. when I view a typical problem contact eg. work number is +1555 666 7777 x 123 (he also has a home and a Cell No. (extension x123 is stored as "p"123 so I can dial it from my phone.) I don't have any phone fields left to duplicate a number with and without the distention.

is this a proposed solution? because that would work for me!
As i see it my skype number and my phone numbers are the same when dialling, i would be happy to enter the phone extension by DTMF after the call connects, but i don't seem to have a different dial option for a skype entry and i cant enter a phone number in the skype name box.

You just want to "Add a field" in the contact..scroll down to "Skype" field:

...and just leave out the extension/extra key presses from the field, and enter manually, once the call connects.

When you make a call, the extra key presses will still be visible/saved under the normal cellular call field, "so you at least know what they are":

thanks colnago,
I did try that the first time I red you previous post but my skype field is only for skype names not numbers. i get the error displayed below.
and it dosen't dial. but if a solution similar to this existed that would solve the problem.

I still find it hard to believe i am only 1 of 5 people in the whole world to have experienced this issue.

just thinking about it gain shouldn't Nokia just fix it?

You'd think you could insert nonsense or something to create a pause if you needed it. Maybe not...

I use Skype Out and it works fine, but I don't need to do anything tricky with it.

Has anyone figured out how to retrieve Skype voicemail from the N900? The only way I know to hear a voicemail is to log on to Skype on a computer or pay to have the voicemail transcribed and read it on email.

It's not Nokia's responsibility to fix Skype. The inability to insert pauses is prevalent throughout the Skype platform.

But regarding your failed contact, I don't know, try not putting the + sign in the "Cell" number field...however add it to the Skype field. I have no issues setting up a new contact like in the pictures I posted.

Also, take out the "pp123" after the other "Call with Skype" field (dark blue Skype symbol)...that's what's most likely causing the error.

I use Skype, SkypeChat, and SkypeOut, but I don't have any contacts with phone numbers with anything outside + digits, so I'm not bitten by the 'p' issue.

how can i do that?

it is the phone field that has the "p" pause in the dial string "p123" is DTMF after the call.
