In all honesty, forget about Nokia and forget about MS.

All MS and Nokia are focusing on is:
-fixing bugs in their cloud system, making sure their services do integrate
-getting all their core apps converted to Metro (how the hell have they not achieved this yet, is astounding)
-the Xbone, trying to get it to compete better against the PS4
-building new lackluster Lumia devices
-building Windows 8, scratch that, I meant Windows 8.2, crap I meant Windows 9, no crap I actually meant Windows X, oh **** its actually Windows 10
...to me, MS (just like Nokia) has lost touch with the industry and deserve to do bad.

I mean you have Apple who has great demand for products, and can deliver them.
They've got excellent quality*, and customer services, alongside developer and third-party support.
They have the iPhone, iPad, iWatch, iTV, OSX, iCloud, App Store, Apple Pay, and Apple services all tied nicely. They don't do "too much" but for what they do, they do reasonably well.

Then you have Google.
Who's got Google Search, YouTube, Chrome, G+, Gmail, Maps, Earth and trying to tie all these services in and get them on as many platforms as possible. And not to mention things like Google Cardboard, Glass and Car experimenting with the future. And lastly they have Android which will integrate into Smar****ches, Phones, Tablets, and finally TV units. Not to mention the upcoming Android 5.0 Google L(olipop) update.

These two are behemoths, and MS is a distant third with no plans of catching up.

It would be nice to see a forth contender, maybe if a rich corporate were to unite them, I'm thinking an ecosystem collaboration in terms of:
Ecosystems: --------Google - Apple -------- MS ------------------------ "new runner"
OEMs: --------------Samsung - Apple ------- Nokia ---------------------- Hewlett Packard
OS: --------------------Android - iOS/OSX --- Windows ----------------- Ubuntu OS
Store: -----------Google Play - AppStore --- Windows Store --------- Amazon App Store
Gaming: --------Play Games - AppStore --- Xbox Live --------------- Steam
Search: ---------Google/Now - Siri ----------- Bing/Cortana------------ Yahoo!
Browser: --------------Chrome - Safari ------- Internet Explorer ------- Firefox
Email: ---------------------Gmail - iMail -------- Outlook ------------------ Yahoo! Mail
Messaging: ---------Hangouts - iMessages - Skype -------------------- Viber
Storage: ---------Google Drive - iCloud ----- OneDrive ---------------- Dropbox
Maps: -----------Google Maps - Apple Maps - Nokia Here Maps --- Open Maps
Videos: ---------------YouTube - iTunes ------ Vimeo ------------------- Twitch

Other competitors include Facebook, SONY, Blackberry, HP, Opera Browser, Tango, etc etc that I haven't mentioned, but can do at request.

About the only thing from Maemo or the N900 Microsoft might want would be any patents and it would only want those so it can shakedown its competitors for more royalties.
IMHO, Micro$oft and other USA mobile companies have a great interest to not have any concurrent outside USA. Including USA government interest to control the mobile OS (NSA, etc).

Keeping alive and old mobile OS, made for geeks, doesn't fit with this logic.
