I can understand your sentiment and even live by it in many cases but I wonder if it is really a good thing or just a convenient excuse for not doing anything when our perceived cost/effect calculation comes out suboptimal.

Probably a mix would be the obvious answer to that question depending who is asking and how you might get different answers.

If you evaluate the evoulution/devlopment/history of the animals and humans on this planet you can see that its obviously exists such a thing. Otherwise our societies would have been completely different.

Some folks lately seem keen on making all of them extinct.

But thankfully that is impossible...
Cats and dogs will always be here...they don't need much to eat...
and mice and rats and other vermin will always be here too...
So cats and dogs should be fine...
