Hi. Newbie here.

I just bought an N900 from someone, now I thought I should probably wipe it clean, reinstall everything and possibly upgrade. I was reading the instructions HERE and ended up HERE.

Which makes me very confused. Which one is the latest firmware? Those numbers in the file names and descriptions are not as clear as I think they should be. I swear, I really can't tell for sure which one is the latest.

To make things even more difficult, I checked my device and found out that it is running Version 20.2010.36-2.210.2.
$ uname -a
Linux Nokia-N900 2.6.28-omap1 #1 PREEMPT Fri Aug 6 11:50:00 EEST 2010 armv71 unknown

Sorry if I sound stupid, but I am inclined to believe I am running a version that is newer than all those available on that official Nokia page???

I am really confused...

I just realized that this file exists : RX-51_2009SE_21.2011.38-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
I've always used RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin as this is the one I had on my PC and I was thinking it's the latest. Now I already flashed my second N900 and made some configurations so I don't know if I am willing to flash it again with the latest firmware.

My question would be : Is there a big advantage of running RX-51_2009SE_21.2011.38-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin instead of RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin? What are the benefits? Should I still flash my phone?
I had my first N900 flashed with RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin since I got it in 2011 and never thought to look for another version, and it was running fine (with CSSU Stable installed) until I had a hardware problem last week and bought a second one.

So what do you advise me? Reflash with the latest firmware and start installing and configuring everything again or simply live with the firmware I have as the latest doesn't bring some real benefits?

After the first upgrade on ...36-2 you are on ...38-1, it is 'just' a security update, which was not pushed to all devices, because it did not contain a newer firmware, but only security patches for the software, that could be fetched by the application manager.

CSSU is in every way the best solution for your N900!

RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2 is PR 1.3
RX-51_2009SE_21.2011.38-1 is PR 1.3.1

PR 1.3.1 is the last Nokia version for Maemo, as above PR 1.3.1 only differs slightly from PR 1.3 and the security fix is included in the Community Update if you choose that (recommended).

So either of those are fine.

You are on PR1.3 I believe

The 210 at the end is a local variant of the firmware, I believe most you will find now is the Global MR0 version.
I am not sure what variant 210 is but I know 203 is UK English for example.

I think that my old N900 was indeed RX-51_2009SE_21.2011.38-1 even if I flashed it with RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2. When I installed CSSU it must have passed to the latest firmware without me even noticing it.

So for now I will let my second N900 as is and install CSSU to have the latest firmware.

Thanks for the info.

Yes.

CSSU includes the changes (and even corrected certificate problems arised in) PR1.3.1.
So it does not matter which version you flash with (2010.36 or 2011.38) as long as you install any CSSU flavour.
