Some notes --

1) I notice that the Nokia 770 Blog has undergone yet another makeover! The grass is gone. I like the clean look.

2) Some links -- such as the Palm Addict one -- link back to this site. I'm still going to include such things, despite the dreaded Recursion Factor.

3) When I quote from a site, do *not* assume I am grabbing *all* the text. In most cases, I am grabbing just enough to entice you to go visit that site for more. I want people to visit other sites. Cross-pollination and all that.

At that Japanese site you linked to, I ran across what turned out to be a reference to a report by Gartner on PDA shipments by OS. Here's one place that report is reported on:
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS7215702513.html

"Worldwide Q2 PDA shipments bounded up 32 percent year-over-year, to 3.6 million units, according to Gartner. Linux PDAs accounted for less than one percent of shipments, a figure likely to grow as PalmSource completes its transition to Linux, and as much-anticipated Linux PDAs such as Nokia's 770 ship."

And:
"The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet (pictured at right) is Nokia's first Linux product aimed at consumers, and its first entry into the PDA market. If early enthusiasm for the device holds up, it could well boost Linux to a comeback PDA OS market share."

-- Of course, the 770 will be recorded as a PDA for a long time yet, till this niche is well established. I'll be interested to see what the figures will look like a year from now.

Infernal Devices
An Interview with Andrew Morton

http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplan...rviews/5954/1/
>>>One of the most frequently cited difficulties transitioning to Linux (especially on the desktop) is that it can be difficult to find and integrate device drivers for new or obscure hardware. In addition, even when drivers are available, they may involve procedures that still strike terror into the hearts of newbies, such as recompiling the kernel. But is this really necessary? I rang up Linux Kernel guru Andrew Morton to discuss the state of Linux devices drivers in 2005.

I'm always worried that the announcement of the 770's availability will take place without my being aware of it. So every day or two I go to the Nokia site and check the availability section of the FAQ. (No change yet.)

Today I also checked out another part of the FAQ and glancing over the features list I noticed for the first time this entry:

Pre-installed games (Chess, Marbles, Mahjong)

Well, apart from expecting Crazy Parking, this surprised me. Chess?! Way to go!

I hope the games pre-intalled are multi-player ready.

I got to email someone from Nokia. I think they are targetting late September so apps as well as the hardware will are 'ready'.
