lucky git!

if only an external aerial was possible on the other models, then I could use a high gain antenna to look for open access points

Sprint leaks XOHM WiMax service details and devices

I know this is a couple weeks old, but I just ran across it.

I find it a little funny that the writer couldn't figure out what a Xohm Portal might be.

I just got a newish n810 wimax and I'm trying to figure out if I have the latest firmware. Current installed version is 0.2008.14-9. Is this what you guys have? If not, has anyone been able to find a firmware to flash (SSU doesn't find any updates).

Thanks,
Pete

Where'd you get it from? Last I knew, they weren't shipping yet from, well, anywhere.

And no, that's not the latest firmware. N800s (and I think N810s, as well) have had only one Diablo firmware released as a FIASCO image, and that's 4.2008.23-14; SSUs should take over from there.

Friend of mine got it from Nokia

You wouldn't by any chance know where I could get a newer firmware? I've tried both http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N820.php and Nokias windows update tool without any luck. Is there perhaps a repo I need to add to get the SSU going?

Thanks,
Pete

Must be a preproduction model. I've got one, too, but I'll probably have to return mine when testing is over...

Well, it was actually possible to run an SSU on Chinook (even before it was released; see, you get early secret hardware, but I got early secret software ), but it's not defined, and not the right way.

I'd try http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N810.php, but unless some of those images are labeled RX-48, that's not very good either, though you can always try a version for different hardware. (Again, back before the N810 and OS2008 was released, we ran an N810 image on our N800s.) (And I've tried all obvious version versions of nokia_N810W, etc. in hopes of finding the WiMAX edition firmware, and consequent glory; there didn't seem to be anything live at that point, or I just wasn't imaginative enough...)

If all else fails, use a text editor and edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/hildon-application-manager.list, and enable (and perhapd modify) the SSU entry. The link in my sig goes to a post where I might have hinted at the correct procedure. YMMV, of course, and you'll be better off if you can get your friend to smuggle you any internal Nokia Diablo/RX-48 image, and SSU from there...

Oh, yeah, and life is totally unfair.

Edit: if you can't figure out how to upgrade, you can ship it to me, and I'll make it work...

Just, fyi, the RX-48–specific stuff has been purged from the kernel shipped for the N800 and N810.

Does anyone know whether the USB host will be able to handle the XOHM USB or a similar HSDPA USB modem? Since I have an N800 and no smart phone with data plan to use as a modem, something like this which they already supply for notebooks would be a great alternative to WiMax N810. Of course I don't have one to test out and not sure if anyone else has tried.

Also, thanks to everyone for figuring out all the things you can do with the USB host utility, its great how far it has progressed in a year.

Edit: Hadn't seen this thread, sorry.
